Here's an interesting article with Matias Myllyrinne, Remedy Entertainment's CEO, on the attention AAA developers are giving the tablet platform.
iPad "not far at all" from AAA console quality gaming, says Remedy
Although Matias does say that technically speaking the iPad is not far off from consoles he smartly identifies where the biggest challenge is:
I think we'll see loads of [game developers] come to [iPad development] and obviously, as the processing power goes ahead and increases, I don't think that's going to be the limiting factor. I think the nut to crack right now is to build the right kind of content for that medium.
Reaching graphical parity with AAA console games is a nice-to-have, but really taking the touch interface to its fullest potential is what's most exciting to me.
If you talk to any of the smart kids in the class, I think all of them are looking at how do we build good IP for theses devices
The "smart kids" of the last generation of game development were the John Carmacks and the Tim Sweeneys, both amazing engine developers pushing hardware to its limits. I agree with Matias here that the new generation of smart kids are going to figure out and revolutionize the input design/controls for tablets and phones. Bottom line: it's incredibly exciting to be a part of this generation!
