Interesting article in the NY Times about "stupid games."
Just One More Game ...Angry Birds, Farmville and Other Hyperaddictive ‘Stupid Games’
I find the journalist's use of "stupid games" pretty myopic, especially since he tells us from the get-go that he's struggled with gaming addiction and, in my opinion, sees the industry/culture through a smeared lens. The article does have a few gems from some of the people he interviewed, though. The article didn't really hit its stride until pages 4-7, so if you want to skip, pop on over to the bit where he talks to Zach Gage and Frank Lantz.
"It’s as hard to make a really good game as it is to make a really
good movie or opera or hat,” he (Lantz) told me. “Sure, there’s
mathematics to it, but it’s also a piece of culture. The type of game
you play is also a part of how you think about yourself as a person.
There’s no formula that’s going to solve that equation. It’s
impossible, because it’s infinitely deep and wonderful."
Also, don't forget to check out the game on the page itself!
